Killing germs on hands and surfaces is the easiest habit in the house

We make the hand sanitizer that healthcare workers trust and prefer, and we make it in every format a day asks for: 70% ethyl alcohol gel in a pump bottle for the counter, a fine-mist spray for the purse, wipes that clean sticky fingers at the playground, and foam from a touch-free dispenser by the office door. All of it kills 99.99% of the most common germs that may cause illness, and all of it carries skin conditioners so hands stay soft after the twentieth use.

Surfaces get the same care. PURELL surface disinfectant sprays and disinfecting wipes kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on hard, nonporous surfaces with no harsh chemicals, no bleach and no rinse, even on food-contact counters. And at the sink, HEALTHY SOAP foam removes more dirt and germs than ordinary soap and rinses clean.

Hi, it's nice to meet you

We help make the world a healthier place through science, research and the simple habit of clean hands.

PURELL hand sanitizer spray held in heart-shaped hands
Built on science

Built on science

PURELL was born in 1988 in Akron, Ohio, when the GOJO family company set out to make a hand sanitizer that healthcare workers would use between every patient. The formula had to kill germs and be kind to skin, and that pair of demands still drives every product on this site: 70% ethyl alcohol with four skin conditioners, foam that spreads thin, wipes that lift dirt, soap that is 89% biobased.

Ready for wherever life takes you

The first stop moved. It used to be the hospital corridor; now it is the front door, the car cup holder, the classroom wall and the restaurant pass-through. So we make the 1 oz jelly-wrap bottle for the backpack, the 2 L pump for the break room, the 1200 mL sealed refill for the lobby and the 20-count wipes pack for the glove box.

A bottle at the entrance says something before anyone says hello. It tells guests, patients, students and staff that the place they are walking into takes their well-being seriously. That is why we put the PURELL name on the bottle in letters you can read from across the room.

Works Well and Doesn’t Dry Out Skin!

I’ve used this product extensively and have been very pleased with its performance. Unlike many hand sanitizers, it doesn’t leave my hands feeling dry or irritated, even with frequent use. The consistency is good, it absorbs quickly, and there’s no overpowering residue afterward. I keep a bottle of Purell Advanced in each of my vehicles and reach for it after using shared surfaces like self-checkout screens, door handles, menu boards, and ATMs. It’s convenient, reliable, and easy to use on the go. Overall, this is a solid, dependable product that does exactly what I expect, and I’d recommend it for everyday use.

Great purchase

I love these handy, portable spray sanitizers. They are light and not sticky like gel. The scents are pleasant and not overpowering. Easy to carry and use and a good value for the price.

Find the PURELL hand sanitizer, wipes and soap that are right for you

Hand sanitizer: gel, foam and spray

A hand sanitizer is only as good as its alcohol content and the habit of using it. The CDC recommends an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not available; PURELL Advanced gel, foam and spray carry 70% ethyl alcohol, and Prime Defense carries 85%. Rub it over both hands, between the fingers and under the nails until dry, about 20 seconds, and it kills 99.99% of the most common germs that may cause illness. Our Naturals formula uses plant-based alcohol and essential oils; the 2in1 Moisturizing gel doubles the conditioners for hands that sanitize all day; the Soothing Gel adds aloe and vitamin E. The spray covers both hands in a fine mist and dries fastest; the foam spreads thin from a dispenser; the gel is the format a pump bottle on the counter was made for.

Wipes for hands, wipes and sprays for surfaces

Hand sanitizing wipes do a job gel cannot: the textured cloth removes dirt, grease and sticky residue while the alcohol formula kills germs, which is why they belong at the playground, the picnic table and the car seat. For surfaces, PURELL Professional, Healthcare and Foodservice disinfectant sprays and disinfecting wipes kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including cold and flu viruses, on hard, nonporous surfaces, and sanitize soft surfaces, with no bleach, no harsh chemicals and no rinse required, even on food-contact counters. Leave the surface visibly wet for the contact time on the label, 30 seconds to 2 minutes, and let it air dry.

Safe, tested and gentle on skin

Every PURELL formula is dermatologist tested, free of parabens and phthalates, and clinically proven to maintain skin health with repeated use; the hand sanitizer contains four skin-conditioning ingredients, the Naturals line adds plant-based alcohol and the Unscented spray and Green Certified foam are fragrance free. The surface line is effective against the pathogens on its label when used as directed and safe to use around people, pets and food, and it is the lack of harsh chemicals, not a lack of power, that lets the room stay occupied. The point of all of it is to prevent illness the easy way: a gentle product people use without thinking.

Dispensers, refills and soap for the station

A hand-hygiene station is a dispenser on the wall, a sealed refill inside it and someone who never has to think about either. PURELL ES4 and CS4 are push-style; ES6, ES8, ES10, CS6, CS8, LTX and TFX are touch-free, with the energy built into the refill so there are no batteries to change. Each system takes only its own 1200 mL (or 700, 1000, 1250 mL) refill of gel, foam or HEALTHY SOAP, sealed at the factory with a fresh nozzle in every bottle. Floor stands put the station in a lobby or a cafeteria line, and the wipes wall dispensers and brackets hold canisters and refill pouches at hand height. At the sink, HEALTHY SOAP foam, CRT high-performance foam and antimicrobial foam fit the same ES and CS families, and pump bottles cover any sink without a dispenser.

Questions people ask about PURELL

Is PURELL 70% alcohol?

PURELL Advanced, Naturals, 2in1 Moisturizing and Green Certified hand sanitizers are 70% ethyl alcohol; Prime Defense is 85%. All of them clear the CDC's recommendation of at least 60% alcohol for an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Who makes PURELL?

PURELL is made by GOJO Industries, a family company in Akron, Ohio, that created the first PURELL hand sanitizer in 1988 for healthcare workers. In 2025 the PURELL brand joined the Clorox family of brands.

Why do hospitals use PURELL?

Because the formula was designed for them: it kills 99.99% of the most common germs that may cause illness, it is clinically proven to maintain skin health with repeated use, and the sealed dispenser refills keep a busy corridor stocked without cross-contamination.

Is hand sanitizer better than washing with soap and water?

No. Soap and water remove all kinds of germs, dirt and chemicals; hand sanitizer kills germs on hands that are not visibly dirty or greasy. Wash when you can, sanitize when you cannot, and keep both at the first stop.

What is the difference between sanitizing and disinfecting wipes?

Sanitizing reduces bacteria to a safe level, which is what a food-contact surface needs; disinfecting kills nearly all listed bacteria and viruses and takes a longer contact time. PURELL Foodservice products sanitize; Professional and Healthcare products disinfect.

Which refill fits my PURELL dispenser?

The one with the same system name printed on the dispenser: ES4, ES6, ES8, ES10, CS2, CS4, CS6, CS8, LTX-12, TFX, ADX, FMX or NXT. Refills are not interchangeable between systems; each line page lists them by system.

How to use hand sanitizer correctly

Enough to wet both hands, rubbed in until dry, about 20 seconds. The short guide, with the dos and don'ts the CDC publishes and the mistakes we see most.
